Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky. Children’s Home St. Pölten – Book Presentation and Conversation

The children’s home of the Glanzstoff factory in St. Pölten is a little-known project in the oeuvre of Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897–2000).

Christine Zwingl and Christine Schwaiger will present the book and discuss the question of how architecture and design can be conceived for children.

Further information about the event will follow.
Registration is required: anmeldung@schuette-lihotzky.at
(presentation will be held in englisch)

The conversion of the former director’s villa, carried out during the post-war period under Soviet occupation, demonstrates how Schütte-Lihotzky drew on her many years of experience in child-friendly architecture and furniture design for this project.
The original interiors, which have since been replaced, are reconstructed in the new book on the basis of detailed plans from her estate, using models and visualisations. A full-scale reconstruction of a children’s armchair also makes her design ideas directly tangible.

About the Book

The book brings together contributions by Mona Jas, Thomas Pulle, Andrea Thuile and Christine Zwingl, as well as conversations with Eva B. Ottillinger and Martin Bergmann, offering different perspectives on the children’s home and its design. A previously unpublished photo album by Walter Weber also provides an insight into everyday life at the St. Pölten Children’s Home.
