Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky Walks
Guided architectural tours by Felicitas Konečny as part of the “Vienna Walks” programme
Already confronted with the issue of “workers’ housing” as a student, the architect Margarete Lihotzky (1897-2000) soon excelled with well thought-out solutions to the housing crisis. Social commitment, rational analysis and high-quality design characterise her work. She worked with Adolf Loos on the Friedensstadt project (1921). When Josef Frank invited her to plan terraced houses for the Werkbund Estate (1932), she was working on the City of Frankfurt’s building programme as an expert in “typification in housing” .
Garden City Visions in Penzing
Industrialisation has often led to a separation of residential areas and green spaces. This gave rise to the Garden City movement in the 19th century, which sought to counterbalance the drawbacks of modern (urban) life through new urban planning concepts, without losing its benefits. It takes vision to reconcile conflicting objectives. Three projects from 1921 (Eden Estate), 2007 (Model Estate 9=12) and 1974 (City of the Child) demonstrate just how different these can be.As a young architect, Grete Lihotzy was involved in the planning for the Eden Estate at Ernst Egli’s office, working on house types and a children’s home. From the very beginning, the connection between interior and exterior, between house and garden, was a key theme for her.

Social commitment, rational analysis and high-quality design characterised her work. At the Friedensstadt, she worked alongside Adolf Loos. Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky and her buildings in Brigittenau
Otto-Haas-Hof municipal housing complex 1925, Globus-Verlag office block 1956, Kapaunplatz nursery school 1952. These diverse building projects demonstrate the architect’s development through her international work in Frankfurt, the Soviet Union, Paris, Istanbul and Sofia, as well as the influence of political circumstances on her work. Social commitment, rational analysis and high-quality design remain the constants of her architecture; Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897–2000) only received public recognition again in her old age as a ‘contemporary witness to a century’.Date 1: Saturday, 1 August 2026, 09:30–12:00
