The first Viennese WALK of FEM in Margareten

Where? Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky Park, 1050 Vienna
Since May, women pioneers from Margareten have been honoured in Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky Park as part of the WALK of FEM. They represent diverse ways of living and have been active in the arts and sciences, in anti-fascist resistance, in the fight for equal rights, and against exclusion and discrimination. Many of them also fought for a self-determined and queer life.
Already honoured are Smaragda Berg, musician and an important figure in lesbian networks; Helene Kafka (Sister Restituta), a nun and resistance fighter against National Socialism; Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, Austria’s first female architect, communist and resistance fighter; Helga Pankratz, author, journalist and LGBTIQ activist; and Ines Rieder, historian, author and activist in the women’s and lesbian movements.

Friederike Mayröcker – one of Austria’s most significant poets
Barbara Reumüller – initiator of the queer film festival Identities
Adelheid Popp – socialist politician and campaigner for women’s rights
Teresa Feodorowna Ries – internationally renowned sculptor
Hermine Schwarzer-Zaynard – anti-fascist resistance fighter

We are making the stories and achievements of these women visible and celebrating the expansion of the WALK of FEM together.
