Politics of the Kitchen. Beyond Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky


100 years after the design of the Frankfurt Kitchen, the international conference “Politics of the Kitchen. After Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky” explores the kitchen as an architectural, social, and political space.
Taking Schütte-Lihotzky’s concepts of the kitchen and domestic life as a starting point, the conference examines historical and contemporary ideas of the kitchen, housing, and social reproduction. The contributions explore the Frankfurt Kitchen in the context of global modernism, its reception and further development, as well as intersectional and queer-feminist critiques. At the heart of the conference are questions of labor, gender, care, communality, and the political dimensions of domestic space.

Conceived by Stefanie Kitzberger and Bernadette Reinhold (Art Collection and Archive, University of Applied Arts Vienna) in cooperation with Judith Augustinovič, Christine Oertel, and Christine Zwingl (Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky Center Vienna).
