Having already been confronted with the issue of ‘workers’ housing’ as a student, the architect Margarete Lihotzky (1897–2000) soon distinguished herself with well-thought-out solutions to the housing crisis. Social commitment, rational analysis and high-quality design characterised her work. At the Friedensstadt, she worked alongside Adolf Loos. When Josef Frank invited her to design terraced houses for the Werkbund estate, she was already contributing to the City of Frankfurt’s building programme as an expert in ‘standardisation in housing construction’.
