Industrialisation has, in many cases, separated residential areas from green spaces. This led to the emergence of the garden city movement in the 19th century, which sought to offset the drawbacks of modern (urban) life through new urban planning concepts, without losing its benefits. It takes vision to reconcile conflicting goals. Just how different these can be is demonstrated by three projects from 1921 (Eden Estate), 2007 (Model Estate 9=12) and 1974 (City of the Child).

As a young architect, Grete Lihotzy was involved in the planning for the Eden Estate at Ernst Egli’s office, working on house types and a children’s home. From the outset, the connection between interior and exterior space, between house and garden, was a key theme for her.
