Book presentation: Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky. Architecture. Politics. Gender. New Perspectives on Her Life and Work
About the bookMargarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897-2000) entered the modernist canon with the Frankfurt Kitchen. She is also considered a pioneer of social architecture, an activist of the women's movement, and last but not least, a heroine of the resistance against the Nazi dictatorship.
In this book, now also available in English, the latest research from art and contemporary history, pedagogy, and gender studies provides a differentiated picture of the architect, whose estate is housed at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The volume sheds light on her rich architectural œuvre, her transnational experiences and professional networks, her political career as a communist, and, last but not least, her current reception. It presents Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, an icon of architectural history, beyond all myths.
