Industrialization often separated living space from green space. In response, the Garden City movement emerged in the 19th century, aiming to counterbalance the drawbacks of modern (urban) life with new urban planning concepts—without losing its advantages. Vision is required to reconcile such seemingly opposing goals. Three projects—Eden Settlement (1921), Model Settlement 9=12 (2007), and City of the Child (1974)—illustrate how differently this vision can take shape.

As a young architect, Grete Lihotzy worked in Ernst Egli’s office on the planning of the Eden Settlement, contributing to housing types and a children’s home. From the very beginning, the connection between indoor and outdoor space, between house and garden, was a central theme in her work.
