Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky and the Settlement Movement
Already confronted with the topic of “workers' housing” during her student years, architect Margarete Lihotzky (1897–2000) soon impressed with well-considered solutions to the housing crisis. Her work is characterized by social commitment, rational analysis, and high-quality design. She worked with Adolf Loos on the “Friedensstadt” (Peace City) project. When Josef Frank invited her to design row houses for the Werkbundsiedlung, she was already contributing her expertise in “standardization in housing construction” to the municipal building program in Frankfurt.Meeting point: 13th district, Jenbachgasse stop (Bus 56B), near Hermesstraße 36F
