Urania Film Soirée 2025 – „Kinder der Kämpfer“

„The year 1934 and its consequences for Austria"
A documentary by Fred & Georg Turnheim
Film soirée and discussion to mark the liberation of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky from prison.
Venue: VHS Wiener Urania, Uraniastraße 1 , 1010 Vienna, Mittlerer Saal
Cost: 10 Euros

The Urania Filmsoirée is a co-operation between the VHS Wiener Urania and the Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky Club. We are continuing the tradition of the Women's Committee for Film Screenings at the Urania, which regularly showed anti-fascist and anti-war films from 1960-1994.

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the uprising of the Sozialdemokratische Schutzbund (Social Democratic Protection League) in 1934, the documentary film Die Kinder der Kämpfer was produced as part of a project by the International Institute for Media. The documentary was initiated and largely created by the brothers Fred & Georg Turnheim in memory of their father Friedrich (Fritz) Turnheim. For the first time, a documentary is dedicated to the Republikanische Schutzbund from the perspective of the second and third generation. The children and grandchildren of the now deceased fighters embark on a search for their memories and experiences. Scientists who evaluate the events and their consequences contribute. How much do the events of February 1934 still influence the descendants of the fighters today?
What does it mean to be a Schutzbund-child? What can be learned for the future from the events themselves, but also from the perspectives and experiences of those born later?

The film will be followed by a discussion with Antonia Winsauer. She is a historian, AHS teacher and Viennese networker at ERINNERN.at. We will talk about the period of Austrofascism in collective and personal family memory. After the discussion, questions can be asked.
